Mad Props: A Q+A with Mad Men Costume Designer Janie Bryant

Up this week in our Q&A with Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant: the old school stylings of Roger Sterling.
GQ: How do you approach dressing Roger and how does that change from when he's in the office to out of it, like at the dinner party?
JB: The development of Roger's costume design comes from his being from old money. It is all about those old school elements of design, the idea of the old world that is very sophisticated. The costumes I design for his office attire are bespoke three-piece suits, which come from an earlier time period.
In this episode I wanted the palette in the office to come from his classic gray suit and contrast it with the dinner party scene, hence putting him in a classic navy sports coat. To me it's the ultimate sign of old money but it's also Roger's interpretation of a more casual, sporty dinner attire.

Behind the Line: "A Day in the Park" With Adam Kimmel x Carhartt

Remember when Sasha Jenson tells the freshman blocking his way to the keg, "Oh no! Look, look, it's the cops!" in Dazed in Confused? Yeah, well, I found myself repeating that line in my head as I perused Adam Kimmel and Carhartt's latest campaign, entitled "A Day in the Park," starring photographer Ari Marcopoulos as a sort of well-tailored state trooper. We caught up with Kimmel last week to discuss the ongoing Carhartt collab, the police, and taking his daughter to the playground.
Great Moments in Trying Too Hard: Mr. Tom Brady

Listen, we appreciate it when anyone puts effort into an outfit, especially athletes. So we can tip our hat to Tom Brady, who showed up to the new Boston Rag & Bone store opening in a tipped cardigan by the R&B guys we're pretty keen on. The hat we are tipping, however, will not be the one on his head. That cap is best left from where it came: the props department of Downton Abbey. Had Brady followed the old adage about removing one thing before leaving the house, this look would have been perfect. Instead it's the style equivalent of throwing a Hail Mary when all you need is a first down.
In other news, we really hope your wife bought those shorts...
Stuff We Like: J.Lindeberg’s The Documentary and A Dream

J.Lindeberg's biannual book is something I've found myself drawn to at their showroom each season. It's big, edgy, and filled with vibrant photography. Next spring's offering is more of the same: a black and white portrait series, and Q+A on a gray suit collab the label did with Savile Row tailors Norton & Sons, and a killer editorial shot on Lizzie Jagger (above), among other features. The brand book is the perfect intersection of fashion, art, and culture, and always with a very Scandinavian point-of-view. Swede work, guys.
